Fervent Dream

Wolverine are:

Stefan Zell - Bass, Clean Vocals

Tracklisting:

1. Whispers On The Wind
2. Echoes
3. More Than Grief
4. Again?
5. Last Words

The first track 'Whispers In The Wind' starts off with some didgeridoo sounds before the heavy guitars come in. The music is quite heavy, but still retains a nice melodic quality. The vocals are a mixture of normal and death metal style. For me they work very well together. There's some excellent guitar work and throughout the track there are many changes in direction, mood and tempo. There's also some nice acoustic guitar and at this point the music as quite atmospheric.

The second track 'Echoes', no, this is not the Pink Floyd track.

This track starts off with acoustic guitar and then after a while the sound of a violin comes in. This intro of sorts reminds me a bit of the folk/rock bands of the late 60's/early 70's.

When the electric guitar comes in, the music still retains the same kind of feeling, but this doesn't last and after two and a half minutes, the heavier sounding guitars come crashing in with the death metal style vocals too.

The music then still stays heavy even when the vocals stop, but then the music gradually changes and becomes more melodic as the track progresses.

There are more vocals later, but these are more normal, and these are followed with some stunnning guitar work.

Once again there are some more death metal vocals and after some more excellent guitar.

The 3rd track 'More Than Grief' is a hard hittin' track, but once again, there is still a nice melodic quality about it. This is another track that contains both normal and death metal style vocals and there are many changes throughout. There are also times when the music becomes very atmospheric.

Track 4 is 'Again?' and starts off with some nice acoustic guitar work with some mellow keyboards, at this point the music is very soothing and relaxing, but not for long.

After 50 sec's the heavy guitars and death metal vocals come in and then for a while the music changes between a the acoustic from the start and the heavier style.

Later there are more changes in direction, mood and tempo with some excellent guitar and vocals being sung in the normal way.

The final track is 'Lost Words', this is a short track played on acoustic guitar and is quite atmospheric. There are some vocals too and these are fairly soft, distorted and atmospheric too.

There are quite a few bands now who are mixing death metal style vocals with the music being more melodic and progressive, for me I like it especially if it's done well, and I have to say that Wolverine do it very well.

Highly Recommended!!!

Many Prog/Metal bands have upped the anti in recent months by adding traditionally proven Metal elements and various dark matter to further develop an already dynamic style.

Groups like Dream Theater, of course, among the earliest and undeniable forerunners, and recently Evergrey, who took the genre to new heights by lowering the key and dimming the lights, remain unparalleled in their talent and vision.

Wolverine builds on these stellar accomplishments with what should be recognized as a true album highlight for 2002.

While the music remains challenging and competitive, the songs possess uniqueness in identity that don't give way to drollery or overstay their welcome.

"My Room" and "His Cold Touch" from the very beginning, a combined eighteen minutes, waste no time introducing their vast musical depth and contemplative lyrics,
featuring the spellbinding vocals of Stefan Zell's cascading highs and occasionally lower grunt style for added effect-again the reference to Evergrey figures into the equation and we might add in the likes of Nevermore and Stratovarius to further the comparison.

Each of the ten tracks, exclusive of the brief instrumental piece, carries intelligible and intriguing lyrics led in by quick catch-all opening phrases, both as captivating to read as they are to hear within the context of the meandering and multi-tiered songs.

"Leaving Yesterday" stands out as a highlight among many, featuring slick instrumental breaks of harmony and vocal discourse between Zell and Jamina Jansson's sultry additions.

"The Window Purpose" represents a life and death journey through emotional extremes, beyond past and present and toward what we know and what we can only hope to conceive once that mysterious window is finally opened.

An essential addition to what is fast becoming an ascending form and new breed of "extreme" Metal music.
