“Pieces & Bits” (DVD)

JOHNNY WINTER

For all of the weird combinations in Rock music nobody could have ever contrived a White, Albino, Texas, Blues legend let alone a pair of brothers who fit all the categories mentioned.

Everyone with a Classic Rock album collection has at least a passing knowledge of Johnny and Edgar Winter and since Edgar has traditionally had the spotlight it is only fitting that someone focus in on Johnny and here is one such attempt.

This Anthology of Johnny Winter comes in both sound and pictures then primarily from two sources, home photos and commentary by Johnny and his wife, Susan and video bootlegs that have existed in varying qualities for some time.

The photos are worthy of exhibition and the Winter's should give some consideration to a proper book but the videos are another story.

The videos are mostly grainy reproductions of Nth generation bootlegs and one has to wonder why an alternative source wasn’t found, I mean something better has to exist somewhere.

Despite the scarred video the audio performances are stellar and run the entire gamut of Winter's experience as a solo artist, as producer/sideman and as part of his brother Edgar’s WHITE TRASH.

Personally, I would choose Winter’s sideman work on “Mannish Boy” as the best track to the entire disc but each viewers choice is likely to differ, it is all great.

There is a good deal here in terms of bulk, thirteen full-length live tracks and multiple DVD bonus features, but until a proper documentary of this irreplaceable artist is committed to disc this fits best in the category of “it will do for now.
