What does it say for someone who's listening to a pretty cool disc of a band they've never heard before and in the midst of it all determinedly glares at the little wingnut logo on the corner of the booklet to see how close a representation it is to an actual one? Yeah, something's amiss somewhere I would think. This is another cool band I had never heard of before and again, not expecting much with a bland title like "Words and Terms", The Receivers pack a pretty potent wallop. "Let Down", "Cast Out Airwaves", "Social Incision"-all provide proper evidence of a true Punk rocker in all of them waiting to bust out, but for the time being they're managing to exist in a fairly straight-laced Rock/Alternative, at times Power Pop guise. Oh, and let's not forget one of my favorites of the bunch, song eleven, "Deception" which falls in among the catchier of the lot. But "Let Down" lets it all hang loose from the start, and from the start we learn The Receivers are very proficient in laying on the backing vocals. I'd refrain from calling it harmonizing for the moment, but it adds to an overall thick Rock & Roll texture and raw determined ("With Determination"?) sound that balances itself between commercial favor and garage Rock appeal at about a 40/60 ratio!
