The Aquabats! Vs. The Floating Eye of DeathThe Aquabats! |

This is like The Rocky Horror Picture Show set to audio… Eliminate the vocals and you've got the cheesiest background music that'll go well with any TV cop show from the seventies. With the vocals, you get an interesting blend of ska-flavored modern rock, punk and rockabilly, that's got the fluff of vintage B-52's, The Cars and the rangy tongue-in-cheek humor of The Cramps! The Aquabats have an endearing quality to them… their quirky. As such, there's a silly charm that radiates from the likes of "Giant Robot-Birdhead," "Anti-Matter," and "Lotto Fever" that it's easy to forget that The Aquabats are quite capable of handling their instruments in such a… scratch that, we won't put it quite that way. "The Aquabats Vs. The Floating Eye of Death" combines the wit of the clownish stand up comic that everybody likes to abuse yet when it comes to crunch time, they might just as easily toss aside the clown suit and let the music do the… talking. The lyrics to practically every song are a real hoot… obnoxious without the arrogance, set to light-hearted gripes and a wide assortment of juvenile mischief. It's unclear as to who actually comes out on top in this colorful battle between our heroes and their inimitable foe-but then again, as they say, "what does it matter?" Stay tuned for other amazing adventures destined to follow this first volume, as we look forward to the continuing saga of the "Lovers of Loving Love" and hope to finally discover whatever becomes of "The Man with Glooey Hands" and "Amino Man…" Released by Time Bomb Recordings Review By Vinnie Apicella |
