Altered Beast Terra Firma first saw the light of day as a side project, Freddie (guitars) from Unleashed and Christus (vocals) of St. Vitas, after the demise of both bands, Freddie and Christus were joined by Nico (bass) and Izmo (drums) and Terra Firma became a full time band. Terra Firma's first EP 'Rock and Roll Superior' which was recorded in 1996 and released on Freedom Records sold shit loads to underground metal fans the world over and it wasn't long before the band were snapped up by SPV. Terra Firma's debut album is full of that hard grooving guitar sound similar to that of early Black Sabbath with a rhythm section tighter than a duck's arse. This album rocks like the preverbal bastard right from the word go. I loved the gradual build up of the guitar sound of 'Goatburn', the riff hungry 'Nimbus' and the titanic roller coaster ride of the opening number 'Rainbow Ride'. But top marks has to go to the outstanding mysteriously haunting semi psychedelic folk ballad 'Separate Graves', not only does the song break the album up nicely, but adds a real touch of class to proceedings. But to be frank, virtually every song has something good about it, which gives the album that must play again quality, 40 mins of classic heavy rock played out by a band who haven't necessarily altered the formula, but reinvented it for the '90s and beyond. Great Stuff!!! Play Very VERY LOUD!!!! Released in Europe by SteamHammer Distibuted by SPV GmbH, P.O. Box 72 1147, 30531 Hannover, Germany Website : http://www.spv.de |
