Spirit of Life" EP

3rd Root

Solid rock from Solid State-that's what 3rd Root delivers here on this "Spirit of Life" EP!

I like the way the guitars chug along at the onset of "Zion," real rough-edged and jagged, totally drowning out the vocals which at best are difficult to decipher!

"Wicked" has something of a wicked overtone in it's slithery wind up for an entrance, and this time the singing comes through much clearer until the pre-chorus sets in and all the fussing begins!

I like how the influx of melody intersperses among the otherwise chaotic nature of this one.

"Some People" is a true stab of nineties hard rock-plowed right in the chest from the first minute on, again making effective use of basic guitar riffs and chord changes, softened vocals and just a slow climbing rhythm structure that features a simple half beat pattern that carries the load on one of the catchier moments here.

Is the spirit of life somehow revealed here somewhere?

Can't tell-not enough information to glance over. I wouldn't mind telling you I could use a little spirit from time to time-Oh, spare me from the doldrums of the tiresome and uninspiring.

These guys are alright. I thought they'd crap out by the time "Release" came on-I don't know why, that's just the way it's been going lately.

"Broken" didn't do much for me but they finish up well with "Torn," and the full use of open chord histrionics is really a plus!

"Spirit of Life," a nice mixture of melodic aggression and subliminally effective song breaks and twin tones that add a little more character to the music than a lot of what we're getting today.
