Sin Lets face it music from the Asian continents has never been noted for being highly creative, whether it be soul, dance, etc, etc, it always seems to be living in the past, more content to allow us Europeans to set the pace or style and thats even true to some extent when it comes to metal. But thats all about to change if this debut album 'The Dawn Of Vedic Metal' by Rudra is anything to go by. You see, Rudra combine traditional death metal with more ethnic home grown sounds played out on such instruments as the flute and dolki and introduce the Vedic philosopy to their music. They draw their inspiration from the Sanskrit verses, which they frequently quote throughout the album in the form of a chant. The metal side of things are of a good standard with a nice tight overall feel to it, but it's when the traditional instruments kick in that this album truly starts to develop. The album starts with a traditional Indian style intro before 'Obeisance' rumbles into life and this is the general pattern of things throughout the album with the Sanskrit verses and the traditional music acting as musical breaks rather than songs in their own right. But rather than make the whole thing untidy it does give it plenty of atmosphere, which gets better as the album progresses and by the time side two of the tape gets underway you find yourself looking forward to the breaks, just as much as the main songs. Simply to find out what musical adventure Rudra will take you on next. Although Rudra's style of mixing death metal with traditional music won't appeal to everyone, it is a well needed kick in the bollocks for the death & dead brigade. All you need is an open mind and push those creative brain cells a little further and you may find something very unique. And if you're like me then Rudra will fit very nicely into your collection!!!
