Pitchshifter have again made a fantastic leap into the laps of the traditional idea of musicality and created another invigorating and thought-inspiring version of transverse eclecticism with the release of "Deviant." Having been both acclaimed as industry leaders and basing their ideas on the laurels of diverse entertainment, this is not a band that could ever be easily identified as anything other than politically challenging and unique. Their current album sees them crossing into more of an aggressive guitar/punk element while still retaining many of the industrial core they helped forge on their earlier efforts. The result is not easily classified, by design, but will undoubtedly leave the listener hungry for more even at the end of the album's twelve tracks. Plenty of modern aggression can be found on such titles as "Condescension," which goes heavy on the guitar and maintains a very listenable chorus, as well as the slammin' "As Seen on TV" which features guest ranting by none other than Jello Biafra! Very technologically advanced, as usual, the album contains a multitude of samples-the influences of which are way too varied to mention, and are credited in part to the many contributions of guitarist Jim Davies, providing explanation for a lot of the Prodigy vibe that can be heard. Pitchshifter have again taken their breed of guitar and sample music to new perimeters and gone in a decidedly heavier direction this time around - "Everything's Fucked," "Stronger." Still shifting gears quicker than the rest, these English beatmasters easily retain their hard earned title as front-runners of the cutting edge on this explosive new release. And that's a cute fade in at the end of the last track… yes, even little children love Pitchshifter! Released by MCA Records Review By Vinnie Apicella |
