Content To Drown Alright then hands up all of you who casn remember the Old Grey Whistle Test, possibly the greatest music program ever made. Well for those of you who are young and therefor haven't a clue what I am talking about, the Whistle Test was responsible for introducing the world to bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath Yes and many more, and later on as Punk and New wave took off bands such as The Damned and The Ramones where often seen doing what they did best in front of the Whistle Test cameras. As you are probably aware by now, the yanks did not refer to Punk as Punk, No, they called it New Wave and I suppose to them it was a little less brash, the UK Punk and in most case's was closer to Pop music than anything else, but it did however produce some fine bands and some classic songs. One such song I remember with fondness was Total Control by The Motels, a very simple song with a basic drum and bass rhythm. What made it so great was the vocal delivery and it worked very well, just like the way Portishead use Beth Gibbons unique vocal style to create Portishead's totally unique sound. P.I.C's or their full title Partners In Crime remind me a lot of the above, not for the style of music, but for the simplicity of construction,a basic blues rock rhythm coupled with the superb vocals of Amy Jeppeson make 'Eat Our Dust' the ideal way to relax and unwind at the end of the day. The whole album has a wonderful laid back Saturday night feel to it and each of the 12 trsacks go together so well, that you can't help but be impressed as to how P.I.C. have taken simple rhythms and guitar riffs that have been cut to the bare and turned out an album that is compelling. Out of the 12 tracks my favourites have to be 'Candy Bar Wrapper' and the slightly more uptempo 'Asking For it', but the star of the show has to be the beautiful ballad 'Tuesday's Child', a song sung with such emotion that any music lover worth their salt can't help being impressed with. P.I.C. prove with the release of 'Eat Our Dust' that you don't need to use all the techniques on offer these days to make a quality album, keeping it simple works just as well and you shaould have no trouble at home finding a home for 'Eat Our Dust' in your collection.
