Nektar were one of that
unfortunate group of 70's artists that went ignored or dismissed by
most the first time around - they were a 'cult' band and in the early
70's that mean't only their fans knew they existed...in other words,
don't bother looking for that copy of Rolling Stone or Creem with
the Nektar cover.
A lot of first-rate bands who hung around for several good LPs got
the back of the media's hand in those days (and remember, this was
before TV became a co-conspirator in marketing rock to the masses,
so if the rock press ignored you, you were out there totally on your
own).
This was the same cadre of deep thinkers who soiled their knickers
with excitement over The Ramones and The Sex Pistols a few years later,
if that helps. Anyway, "Dream Nebula" is a good but not great
compilation.
Like most Cleopatra product, this has the whiff of a package slapped
together by hustlers....cheapo packaging, as few credits or sources
listed as possible, no costly 20-bit remastering, and liner notes
that apologize for abridging tracks due to 'space limitations' when
neither cd in this 2-cd set runs longer than 53 minutes!
Luckily for the fan this is on Cleopatra's Purple Pyramid imprint,
so the music included is excellent enough to triumph over the second-rate
presentation of it. Still, when it comes to double-CD band histories,
nobody does 'em better than Germany's Repertoire label and I'd be
interested in seeing them take a crack at the Nektar saga.
