“Live From London” (DVD)

STEVE MARRIOTT

Steve Marriott was a legend’s legend who’s work continues to inspire artists and fans though the man himself no longer can.

Since Marriot’s death in ’94 every bit of unreleased material has found its way to bootleg and with the rapidity in which that material is snatched up it is about time that an official and eminently listenable live performance of his “PACKET OF THREE” days be presented.

As the title suggests this is Steve Marriott recorded live in London and this show is from the Camden Palace Theater where it is basically Marriott, drummer Jerry Shirley and bassist Jim Leverton steam-training number after blues soaked number down the track.

The former SMALL FACES and HUMBLE PIE leader dips deep into his song bag and comes up with a brilliant set that I have never seen anywhere else before and bears printing here.

“What ya gonna do about It,” “Fool for a pretty Face,” “Same, shame, Shame,” “All of Nothing,” “Five long Years,” “30 days in the Hole,” “I don’t need no Doctor,” “Walking the Dog” and “Tin Soldier.”

“Doctor” may be the definitive version of the song with its interpolation of several other classics and completely over the top soloing.

This show was recorded in 1985 which in all fairness was a few years after Marriot ceased producing hits but the man plays like he is at the top of his game and the sweat from his brow is worth gold to the audience if their reaction to the show is any indication.

There are the usual DVD bonus features but the interview with Marriott is a classic in and of itself.

Blues based Rock just didn’t get any better and here is a slice of Marriott’s pie as sweat as anything you have ever tasted before.
