Elastic Since their formation back in 1987, Meshuggah have built up quite a reputation as writters of excellent songs of the highest technical quality, which in turn has resulted in them becoming one of the few European bands to break into the American market. Chaosphere is the Swedes highest anticipated fifth album, and well, put it like this if you're idea of heavy music is the last Def Leppard album, then this will be like a needle up the backside. Because Chaosphere is amde up of nine blistering tracks of such insane brutality, hardness and power that it will turn even the most die hard Slayer fans out there into quivering wrecks after just three tracks, or putting it another way, this is as close as you get to a musical equivalent of Hiroshima. Meshuggah have never been to coin a phrase backward at coming forward and by taking the elements of thrash/speed/ and death m,etal create a sound that although ultimately extreme is very difficult to pigeonhole. Chaosphere kicks off with 'Concatenation', a song so powerful, so intense, it virtually stops you dead in your tracks and leaves you in no doubt of the aural assault to come. 'New Millenium Cyanide Christ' and 'Corridor Of Chameleons' are properly best described as Fear Factory on crack. 'Neurotica', has a fantastic bass line and a lovely stop/start rhythm and it's about this time you begin to realise what a fine bunch of musicians Meshuggah are. Every note fits perfectly into the grand scheme of things even the instrumental 'Unanything' with it's roots firmly in the world of progressive muisc works so well, even if it is surrounded by so much chaos. Chaosphere could have very easily turned out to be just another wall of sound, but because of the Swedes obvious high standard both as musicains and songwriters Chaosphere turns out to be one of the most brutal, intense and ambitious albums of the year.
