"Drive" Mad Melancholy Monkey Mind |
|
This record was just about to get trashed before "Peaceful Mask" came on four songs in and caught my attention with a nice opening hook and soulful verse. Prior to this, a lot of echo and flutter and odd exercises in instrumental frivolity that were at best aimless and unfocused. Not that you're expecting to get doused with seriousness and overnight maturity or contrived kiddie Pop with a title such as theirs-yes you read it right, that's what they're called what they are and don't reverse the order. Keeping in mind this is a bargain basement recording by a still developing sonic Rock/Indie-Pop character, the frayed edge rhythm section captures as unusual an ambience as it does annoyance, and this is somehow oddly constructed within an edgy, sometimes peaceably strummed existence of internal complexities. There's a potential to go somewhere here, I just don't know exactly where that would be, and I'm not sure even they themselves know yet.
