With death, hardcore and black metal being the dominant forces on the music world at present, Doom has almost become the forgotten son. Well, being true to life every now and again that forgotten son knocks on your door to remind you that they're alive and well and doing just fine.

Long Winter's Stare could well be that forgotten son and with Cold Tale Eternal reminding you that doom is still a force to regard.

Long Winter's Stare have been picking up some rave reviews from the music press and quite rightly so as Cold Tale Eternal is classic doom metal. Slow, atmospheric, haunting and heavy as hell.

The First track on Cold Tale Eternal is 'Enter' and starts off appropriately with a haunting acoustic number featuring some great guitar and keyboard work.

'Timeless and Somber' is a full blown metal affair layered over soul shattering drumming. Never has an album track been so aptly named.

'Sigh', features vocals straight from the bowels of hell, a lost soul searching for a home.

The next three songs'Eternal Slumber', 'Anastasia' and 'Paranoid' are without doubt the highlights of the album. 'Eternal Slumber' is almost gothic in it's delivery with some excellent keyboards, fine rhythms and guitar riffs give this a sound very similar to Paradise Lost.

'Anastasia' has a very medieval feel to it. 'Anastasia' has to be the most atmospheric track on the whole album, you can just imagine walking into a castle around the time of Henry 8th, musicians playing, people eating and drinking on long wooden tables. Brilliant!!

'Paranoid' is a heavy haunting number which features some outstanding vocal trickery, while the final track 'Clawing Out' is a slow, heavy somber affair featuring some excellent contrabass work which adds to the chilling finale.

You really have to play this album a few times to fully appreciate what's going on because the attention to detail is such that if you only play this opus just the once, I can guarantee you'll miss something. Long Winter's Stare are a fine bunch of musicians and Cold Tale Eternal is an album that will chill you to the bone one minute and have you floating on air the next.

This is one of the surprise's of the year.
Highly Recommended!!!

The Tears of Odins Fallen

Long Winters Stare

oooooo..... scarey..... see how they dance, the little people of StoneHenge.

Oops, sorry, wrong album.

Actually thats a little unfair, as the mixing of traditional music into sub-60bpm metal makes this a lot more interesting than a lot of the bands who think some fake blood and a
BCRich makes them an accomplished black metal act.

Piano and interesting vocals, both male and female, lift this well above the average, making
them deserving of a wider appeal.

The over-dramatisation which this style demands makes it a litte dificult to take seriously, however if you can get past that then it's not bad at all.

They describe themselves as "Symphonic Dark Metal" which, for once, is actually quite accurate.

If you're into bands such as of Cradle of Filth, Obituary and Death them you may well enjoy this album and all it's pretentions - it may eve be able to convert a few people. I'd listen to it again anyhow.
