Although I've always liked Damian Wilson, both in Threshold and in Landmarq, I think that Landmarq took a mighty big step forward wh en Tracy Hitchings replaced Damian on Landmarq's 1998 album "Science of Coincidence".

Tracy has an emotional, beautiful and strong v oice, and she proofs it one more time on this newly released live album, which is recorded live in Europe during 1998/99.

For those of you unfamiliar with Landmarq, you could say that their music is neo-progressive with reminiscences to Camel, IQ, Marill ion, Pendragon and Pink Floyd.

The highlights are the beautiful ballad "Solitary Witness", the equally beautiful "Between Sleeping a nd Dreaming", "The Overlook" and the closing "Summer Madness".

This is a well worthy live album, one of the better I've heard in a long time. It also has Landmarq's most beautiful cover up to date. Now we can only wait for a new studio album and a second live a lbum, which is planned for 2000.

Highly recommended!

Due to the writing of Landmarq's fourth album, Damian Wilson left the band and was replaced by the fabulous Tracy Hitchings. Previously she's been in bands such as Quasar and Strangers on A Train.

She's also currently a part of Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman's project called "Jabberwocky".

This woman is perhaps the best female vocalist in progressive rock. She's not only doing the vocals on th is album, she's also taken part in writing and co-writing the main part of the albums lyrics.

On this album you can hear a revitalis ed Landmarq with a better and much more appropriate vocalist, and a development in the song writing since the previous album "The Vi sion Pit".

Musically Landmarq is reminiscent to keyboard dominated, symphonic neo-prog bands such as IQ, Marillion, Pallas and Pendragon with a n 80's sound to it.

There's also traces of Camel, Genesis and Pink Floyd influences. This album contains highlights such as the epic track "The Vision Pit", the poppy "Summer Madness", the intricate "Lighthouse", the beautiful "Between Sleeping and Dreaming" and t he amazing last track "The Overlook".

There just aren't enough of superlatives to describe "The Overlook"; it has got all you want. Actually there aren't any weak track on this album, and the produc tion is very good as well.

Maybe this album is more laid-back and commercial than "The Vision Pit", and some may consider it to be to poppy, but I think it's a step forward compared to their previous album.

Unfortunately the cover is very boring, and it doesn't really get your attention if you're not familiar with Landmarq. So there won't be anyone who's buying this album because the cover got them curious.

But I advice you to ignore the cover, buy the CD, and just enjoy the music. It 's on of the best records from 1998, and it's highly recommended.

The Vision Pit

LANDMARQ

Musicians:

Uwe D'Röse - Electric and acoustic guitars
Steve Gee - fretted/fretless bass/6 string bass
Steve Leigh - Piano and synthesisers
Dave Wagstaffe - Drums and percussion
Damian Wilson - Lead and backing vocals

Track list:
1. Cutting Room
2. Pinewood Avenue
3. Infinity Parade
4. Game Over
5. All Performers Stand Alone
6. Narovlya
7. Ten Million And One
8. Bed Of Nails
9. Hanblechia (The Vision Quest)
10. Do Or Die (hidden track).

This is the third album from Landmarq. The original release of "The Vision Pit" was through SI Music/Roadrunner (SI3073-2), but it w as re-issued on Landmarq's own label Synergy in 1997, with the same tracks as on the SI Music/Roadrunner release.

Damian Wilson, also known from the Prog Metal act Threshold handle s the vocals. Damian has got a voice that is very hard to get used to. I really like his vocals on Threshold's album "Wounded Land" from 1993.

His voice suites better in that kind of music than in L andmarq's. Landmarq is playing symphonic rock that is much in the same vein as Pendragon, and Landmarq is one of the premier bands i n this genre from UK.

Unfortunately this release doesn't really live up to the same standard as we are used to with other releases that this musicians hav e been participating in.

The main reason lies in the song qualities. There aren't enough of good, memorable tracks to fill up a whole CD.

The best tracks though are very good, such as "Cutting Room" , "Narovlya" and "Hanblechia".

In the CD booklet you can read the following about the track "Narovlya": "This song was inspired by the letter of a kindergarten teacher, Valentina Klimchenko, who was a witness to the devastation o f the people of her home town, Narovlya, in Belarus after the terr ible catastrophe of the Chernobyl nuclear accident (on the borders of the Ukraine and Belarus) on 26th April 1986".

This track makes you think about the damage that we're doing on our planet Earth, and fills you with anger of how the governments are handling catas trophe situations, with inadequate, wrong or no information at all .

This track is a masterpiece that almost makes the album as a who le worth having. This is not a bad album, but it leaves a lot to wish for. "Narovlya" though is almost justifying you to buy this CD.
