Right off I knew this band had to be from way up North… Now that's not to confuse 'em with the glut of white-faced witchcraft practitioners, but of late, this new breed of rock and roll heroes who've carved their own niche out of the classic power chords of the past… First we got a pleasant taste of bands like Gluecifer… The Deadbeats… Babylon Whores… and now, Lambs. For their part, they're the ones doing the slaughtering here with an album full of shredding riffs, hallowed hooks and vicious screams right out of yesterday's garage! Motown madness and Detroit Diesel Rock takes a right turn somewhere near the arctic border and what a lethal combination! Now of course Entombed is another prime example of what we're dealing with here-Devil references aside-and though they've known no equal, there've been many to come close and here's another one for the broadening but still decidedly exclusive list. "Devil Can't Let You Loose…" yep, no matter how hard you try, you'll never get away. The first two cuts, including that one and "19768 Rounds of Nothing," are down and dirty enough but then "Push It Away" speeds out of control like a punked-up and possessed motorcade storming through the gates of Hades-imagine Danzig back in his prime, or more recently this band of a similarly Northern heritage, Sweden's Terra Firma! Whatever happened to them anyway? But get not confused that we're bowing down to the lords of the pipe, for Lambs will have none of that. The only thing that smokes here are the mammoth jams blazing from this trio of underground terror! By song five I'm convinced they've existed before at the forefront of every single new development that's ever been made in rock music! "Re-Eject" has this rambling nature to it that gets ya grooving in your seat ready to concede to the calling of those long lost years when picking up the guitar meant some serious damage was about to be done! I think the stock in Nokia's about to go up now that these guys have run interference in the lines of external communication! "Bad and Evil…" Nobody's gonna want to get near 'em! Now if you'll excuse me I think I have to go loosen my shirt collar… Released by Devil Doll Records Review by Vinnie Apicella [va85@columbia.edu] |
