Last Fair Deal Gone Down Katatonia |
|
If Opeth are indeed heavy metals answer to Pink Floyd then Katatonia must surely be rocks equivalent of the Cure. Why, well two reasons really, first and probably most obvious is the music, dark, moody, atmospheric but never boring, being beautifully played and immaculately delivered it draws the listener in like a moth to a flame. Secondly, Katatonia like the Cure are almost impossible to pigeon hole. Lets face it they're not metal of any sort really, they're surely not progressive, some might call them underground, but to be honest I don't really care. Katatonia are simply unique and in a world full of clones that's an achievement in itself. Now Katatonia have been around for some time but only really came into the public eye with the release of the outstanding Tonight's Decision and although those of you who already own Tonight will notice the similarities between this and Last Fair Deal, a number of things not only make Last Fair Deal a natural step forward but if its possible even make Katatonia a better band. The vocals for a start are much more confident this is evident from the opening number, Dispossession, the rhythm is much tighter and the twin guitar work has never been so together. As for the songs well to be honest
I really think you should judge Last Fair as a whole rather than
individual tracks, but if I was pushed I would have to say that my stand
out moment would have to be the lyrics on We Must Bury You, probably
because it appeals to my sick sense of humour. Quite simply Last Fair
Deal is one of the musical highlights of the year so far, miss this
as your peril. Released by Peaceville: http://www.peaceville.co.uk Review by Andy Wagstaff
