Swaying from lane to lane between Hard-core and Punk rock, this Canadian street rod's swiftly charging style of lends itself to no one in particular. I'll be damned but I can't think of anyone to compare them to off the top of my head-maybe that's because after three songs, there's nothing left at the top of my head! Pretty intense presentation here, between tensely spoken words loudly vying for equal time with shearing guitar riffage. There's not a lot of bitching going on till we get to the last tune "The Canadian Way" which I'll address momentarily because I've got an opinion on that. There's nothing formulaic or really predictable going on here-surprise, surprise-thinly spread melody over layers upon layers of burnt verses. not always the easiest to swallow, and at times clumsily portrayed but this often lends to the differences between Guy and the rest of the pretenders out there. What's with this Guy Smiley thing anyway? I never thought I'd ever hear of that name again-you know that pointy-nosed goof from what was it... Sesame Street I think? He was a game show host or something-a real dick. But anyway, yeah, I dig the, what sounds like overdubbing with the guitar stuff, especially on this tune "Breakdown," easily one of the disc's best! If there's anything repetitive to pull from this, it's probably a consistency in subject matter which is all rooted mainly in personal accountability and self-reflection-growing up, growing out-the finest form of therapeutic healing, and I trust the "guys" have little trouble getting anything out in the open! The Winnipeg-based foursome ends things with a plea for the return of any real Canadian's life-blood, the game of hockey! Yes, I agree they didn't deserve to be left out in the cold, as it were, but with all this internal bloodletting taking place here, what about addressing the fact that support plays as big a factor as anything for holding onto something so sacred! If they ain't going to the games, the games get played somewhere else. and yes, it's ridiculous to think of Tampa or Phoenix as "hockey towns!" I do trust however that Guy Smiley will make their views felt on the matter and as a band, will not soon befall the same fate as the once might Jets. But pride and perseverance, much like that which embodies their music, has to exist in all facets of society! Released by Devil Doll Records Review By Vinnie Apicella |
