VH1: Storytellers The Doors: A Celebration |
|
On this exclusive VH1 Storytellers compilation, some of rock's biggest names come together to pay tribute to The Doors - the nband that would forever change music in the 1960's. Jim Morrison's poetic and controversial lyrics combined with the band's dark, hypnotic sound contiue to influence artists and fans from all walks of music. This DVD is a mere sampling of The Doors' monumental impact on the rock world. The Doors: Ray Manzarek - Keyboards The tracks: Bonus Tracks: In 1965, two karma-conscious UCLA students - Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison, came together to form one of the most original, influential and controversial bands in music history. With Manzarek on electric organ and Morrison on vocals, the pair recruited guitar player Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore at a local meditation center. They christened their new group The Doors. The Doors hit the msic scene in 1967, with their froundbreaking.slef-titled debut album, taking the anti-Vietnam geberation for a wild psychedelic ride into the depths of darkness. Krieger's flamenco-influenced sound, Densmore's jazz training and Manzarek's electric organ combined blues, classical, Eastern music, and pop with Morrison's stream -of-conscience poetry to give the group is distinctive sound. While The Door's brooding songs earned them a fanatical following, Morrison's reckless personality challenged the band's unity. In 1969, Morrison's infamous indecent exposure incident at a Miami performance nearly destroyed them. But the band persevered - even through Morrison's death in Paris in 1971. The Doors finally disbanded in 1973. Although it has been over 25 years since Morrison's death, The Doors' legacy remains strong. Some believe that the myth has outgrown the music, but if it weren't for the music, the myth would not remain. Well, here we have on this DVD, a VH1 Storytellers compilation featuring 3 of the origianl The Doors members playing their music with a line up of 6 vocalist's from other bands to pay tribute to The Doors. All of the vocalist's featured on this DVD, Perry Farrell, Pat Mooham, Ian Astbury, Travis Meeks, Scott Weiland and Scott Stapp are just brilliant, not only in their own right, but they have come to this celebration and performed the song's chosen absolutey superbly. Each and everyone of them, put their heart and soul into their respective songs, and what can I say about The Doors, well, you can see the passion is still there, I was very impressed with Robby, he seems a lot more fluent these days, but I suppose having said that, he has been playing ven though The Doors did disband of those years ago. But I can tell you, they all seem very comfortable, and considering they haven't played together for many years now, I think they all do a splendid job. I think the producers of VH1 Storytellers never expected to get The Doors to play together for this show. It's a pity, we only get an excerpt from Perry Farrell (Janes Addiction), on the opening track, I would like to have seen some more especially as Perry doesn't feature on any other track. You see the complete tracks of all of the other featured vocalists, , and there is some quite humourous stories in-between each track, when one of the band members explain what the track was about, with one of the other's stating it was about something completely different, and there are lots of other different stories that will amuse.
