The Sound of Perseverance
DEATH

Death's latest is titled The Sound of Perseverance, and if anyone knows about perseverance, it's frontman/mastermind Chuck Schuldiner. Three years after an unceremonious split with Roadrunner, Schuldiner has revamped Death once more for Nuclear Blast, and it's about as strong a work as you could expect.

Where do you think up music like this?!

Total dizzying prog-metal that jettisons the blood & guts brutality of early stuff like Scream Bloody Gore for brutality of a different sort on songs like the astonishing "Scavenger of Human Sorrow," and "Spirit Crusher." The songs often bog down and are indeed overlong, but this is a work of such ferocity and imagination that it commands nothing but respect and admiration. Other metal bands wish they could be this innovative.

Released on Nuclear Blast, Hauptstrasse 109. 73 072, Donzdorf. Germany
