Dead Can Dance are an Australian duo containing the vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry. They are living in England though and they started out as a quintet at the beginning of the 80's.

This is their first album, recorded in 1984, and it's a collection of the songs they had written between 1980 and 1984.

The self-titled album was released at the beginning of 1984, and later that year they were contributing two songs to the first This Mortal Coil album: "It'll end in tears".

The first Dead Can Dance album have some reminiscenses to The Cure and it's perhaps the closest Dead Can Dance have ever been to traditional rock music.

They are mixing female and male vocals and it became something of a trademark for the band.

This CD release also contains Dead Can Dance's 12" EP "Garden Of The Arcane Delights", also recorded in 1984.

Although Dead Can Dance have never reached what could be called a big audience, their compositions are very good, and should deserve a wider recognition.

This debut album is a very interesting album from a band that later would become even more interesting.

9. Indoctrination (A Design for Living)

Dead Can Dance's second album "Spleen And Ideal" was a big step forward both musically as well as the compositions.

They started to find what would later become their own trademark sound, which is quite pretentious and original. It hasn't much in common with rock music.

It's rather classical / baroque inspired music with choral passages. This album also contained Cellos, Timpani, Trombone and Violin and the production was far better than on their debut album.

Musically this album is somewhere between their self-titled album and the music that they were to develop even further on the albums they released later on in their career. This album has reminiscent to Cocteau Twins.
All in all a very good album.

1988 was quite a busy year for Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry.

They released their forth album "The Serpent's Egg", and later that year they wrote the film score for the film "El Nino De La Luna", where Lisa Gerrard made her acting debut.

Besides having a lot of choral passages, the album "The Serpent's Egg" have a lot of influences from the Middle East.

This album isn't as good as their 1986 album "Spleen And Ideal", and it gets a little bit boring at times. "Spleen And Ideal" had many good moments and interesting melodies.

This isn't one of Dead Can Dance's most interesting albums, but all in all it has many good qualities.

"A Passage in Time" is just as the name implies A Passage in Time.

It's a collection of previously released works from 1985-1990, which includes two new pieces specially recorded for the album: "Bird" and "Spirit".

Maybe the time for this "Best Of" was chosen in 1991 because it was a very busy year for the Dead Can Dance members Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry.

They were contributing their talents to many different projects: music, theatres, films and festivals.

This collection contains some of the best songs ever recorded by Dead Can Dance, and it's a perfect album to start with if you want to discover their music.

Highly recommended!

Into the Labyrinth

DEAD CAN DANCE

Performed by Lisa Gerrard & Brendan Perry

Tracklist:
1. Yulunga (Sprit Dance)
2. The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove
3. The Wind that Shakes the Barley (Dedicated to the memory of Maureen Copper)
4. The Carnival is Over
5. Ariadne
6. Saldek
7. Towards the Within
8. Tell me about the Forest You once called home
9. The Spider's Stratagem
10. Emmeleia
11. How Fortunate the Man with None

"Into The Labyrinth" is Dead Can Dance's sixth album, and their finest work up to date.

The material for this album was written independently by Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry.

It sounds as if the use of electronics has increased and the album has many sampled sounds and effects. Although the frequent use of electronics and samplers, the overall feeling is very "down to earth" with folk and world music influences.

Besides the usual Dead Can Dance sound I can't help thinking of The Doors, Peter Gabriel and Velvet Underground on some of the songs.

This is a very beautiful and varied album and it's the best ever from Dead Can Dance.

Highly recommended.
