JACK BRUCE

If nothing else Jack Bruce certainly has become predictable.

In fact, the last several records that he has released that have found their way to this desk have included versions of “White Room” and “Sunshine of your Love.”

This is pitifully gimmicky but if that is what it takes to get someone to buy the disc and listen to the rest of Bruce’s wondrous stories set to psychedelic Blues then it is obviously a small indignation to bear for the former CREAM bassist/vocalist.

Of the fifteen tracks herein six are actually reworked versions of previous output with each re-interpretation sticking close enough to the original to make it familiar but leaving the end product distinguishable and fitting for inclusion with the rest of the disc’s material.

Bruce is tending toward the jazzier side of Rock and Blues these days leaving purists from each category less than enthused but those with more adventurous ears absolutely stunned that the man can still issue brilliant music as he nears his sixth decade of existence.

“Surge,” “He The Richmond,” “Directions Home” and “This Anger’s a Liar” are tracks that I immediately fancy, (in addition to “White Room” and “Sunshine” of course), but every track is a chip off the old Bruce brain with his bass playing and singing not even slightly diminished by the years.

There are several name musicians that make cameos here and there, Eric Clapton, Vernon Reid, Dr. John and Gary Moore among others, still this disc is all Jack Bruce and more than strong enough to stand on its own merits regardless of any name dropping or nostalgia involved.
