John Henry Influenced by performers as disparate as Barry White and Big Head Todd and the Monsters, sounding now and then like Jim Croce, and willing to share a stage with John Hiatt and Gene Simmons, Blue Yard Garden is a band that will rock you no matter what your musical predilection. The band’s first CD, On the Galaxy, has been described as Southern-Alterna-Groove-Rock with a blues twist. Utah’s Crass Menagerie e-zine named it one of the best albums of 1997. Maryland-based but breaking through, BYG is anything but formulaic. When drummer Ted Natale brought his guitar-playing dad John over to jam one day, the sound came together so well that John was asked to stick around. He did, joining Ted, lead singer Jeff Zutant, bassist Randy Ball, and guitarist William Olson. 'No Good Sundays', is an album full of excellent rock and blues somgs. I must admit, it has taken me quite a while to get into this album, but I can tell you, it is well worth perservering. I am sure it is because this album is fairly laid back. A great album to relax to when you just wan't to sit, relax with a nice glass of beer and unwind. 'No Good Sundays', is also an album that grows on you with it's strong rhythms, catchy melodies/chorus' and after a few listens you'll be tapping your foot, humming or singing along to the tracks. One thing I would like to mention, is that the vocalist Jeff is capable of changing his voice or vocal delivery style to suit each particular song and he does this extremely well. On some tracks he sounds like Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Joe Cocker and Van Morrison to name a few. Music wise, I would say that if you like U2, Van Morrison, Hothouse Flowers then I am sure you will love Blue Yard Garden. My favourite tracks are the excellent 'Simple', the beautiful ballad 'No Good Sundays' and the equally beautiful 'Closer (to the inquisition)' which also features some superb guitar and keyboards.
