Some of you may remember that Tom Gabriel Fischer was the main
driving force behind the band Celtic Frost, who have to rank as one
of the most underrated bands of our time, only now is the Frost's
avante garde style of metal getting the appreciation it deserves.
Well, now onto Apollyon Sun, Fischer along with ex-Coroner
drummer Marty Edelmann, Erol Unala, Roger Muller and
Dany Zingg are attracting a lot of attention and quite rightly
so with a music style that Fischer himself describes as "Evil Pop".
In laymans terms that means combining all thats good about the undergrouns
scene with stabbing riffs, dark melodies, thundering bass lines, first
rate synth work all rounded off with Fischer's own style of
vocals. Best described as hypnotic, giving it a very industrial feel.
Yes, you could say "Evil Pop" is the perfect description.
Throughout this 5 track MCD Apollyon Sun show flair and imagination
that not only makes this a must have, but with the full length album
'Sub' due for release early next year promising to be even more
adventurous. Apollyon Sun may well indeed shine at last for
Mr. Fischer and Co.
As for the music, the opening track 'God Leaves' has a very
sinister cold feel to it, mainly due to some excellent synth/programming.
While for sheer power and aggression, top marks go to 'Reefer Boy'
and 'The Cane', the slower of the two 'Reefer Boy' has
a real industrial feel to it, while 'The Cane' is a more manic
affair with Fischer's vocals to the fore.
'Concrete Satan', my favourite of the set has a wonderful intro
featuring some ace programming, a fine bass line while the rest of
the song features some fine guitar work, possibly the most metal track
on the album.
Bedlam And Blind', the final track is a upbeat industrial affair
where all the band members get to show what they can do.
What becomes very clear whilst listening to God Leaves (And Dies)
is that Apollyon Sun have merged to combine all the good modern
technology without losing that metal feel.
Brilliant Stuff!!!
