little while since the last update. This time around we're gonna
plug some of what's going on with some of the Second Stage acts.
Next week: Main Stage band updates as well as news on Cradle of
Filth and Voivod. Read on... KILLSWITCH ENGAGE (Roadrunner) Like a well-oiled machine, Killswitch Engage was fired up on all cylinders during their New England Hardcore & Metal Festival two weeks ago. (Shadows Fall also performed.) It's hard to believe that this was a band that had spent the previous month in the studio working on their follow-up to 'Alive Or Just Breathing'; a band that has played a total of three shows stateside in 2003 and only a handful of dates in the U.K. Proving that they are a live force to be reckoned with, Killswitch took to the hometown stage in front of a packed house. The crowd was a writhing, slamming mass of bodies until the band left the stage. The energy that Killswitch commands has to be experienced. In other words, don't miss them--they are one of the top bubbling-under acts around right now. We've posted some pics at http://www.ozzfest.com so you can see for yourself. (Photos in the NEWS section.) By the way,
bassist Mike D. designed the Metalfest logo and their merch for
the third year in a row. Mike is also busy working on designs for
the upcoming Killswitch Engage album artwork and all related materials.
You can check out some of his newest designs at http://www.killswitchengage.com/ozz/fest.html. SHADOWS FALL (Century Media) The band just wrapped up a full European tour with Soilwork and Children of Bodom. As they gear up for Ozzfest, they will make time to attend the Metal Hammer U.K. Awards party over the weekend; they are nominated in such categories as "Best Album" and "Best Underground Act". Good luck, boys. The group have also been nominated in the coveted Boston Phoenix's (one of those alt-weekly rags) Best Music Poll 2003. Shadows Fall are listed in the categories "Best Local Act", "Best Metal/Hardcore Band" and "Best Album" (competing against other highly recommended local talents like Cave-In, Killswitch Engage, Unearth, and Converge). But, we encourage you to vote for the Shads by visiting the Phoenix's web site at http://bostonphoenix.com. For a taste

MEDIA section to download "Destroyer of Senses", a great
song about, uh, beer. The video's been played on the "finally,
about time, thanks MTV" NEW Headbanger's Ball the past coupla
weeks. MTV Headbanger's Ball airs at 10pm EDT/7pm PDT so TiVo that
sh*t if you can't make the appointment. DEPSWA (Geffen) These guys are heavy but don't neglect the lyrical component; got solid chops but don't put them before good song structure; and, yes, have one of the best debuts of 2003 so far. Their spinner, Two Angels and a Dream, will be released June 3, preceeded by first single/video, "This Time" (now streaming at the re-lauchned http://www.depswa.com. Also, the band has a great media player that has a LOT of audio and stuff: http://www.bandbuilder.com/depswa/index.php?ref_code=D18359. _____________________________________________________ TWISTED METHOD (MCA) Now, we finally
get to TWISTED METHOD from Fort Myers, Fla. LOVE THESE GUYS! Energy.
Hooks. Presentation. HEAVY. YOU'VE HEARD
NOTHING YET. MOTOGRATER (No Name/Elektra) Motograter is
a band to be experienced live--that's our opinion, at least. Don't
get us wrong, the CD is impressive and their production is up to
snuff, but this band is an EVENT that needs to be seen as well as
heard. Maybe a little influenced by Slipknot, maybe a little over-the-top,
maybe one of the better bands on the entire Ozzfest. Check out their
site at http://www.motograter.com
for the a peek at their new video "Down" from the full-length
Moto-debut, to be released June 24. Jamey Jasta
is hard at work on the next Hatebreed rekkid, but he's also CEO/mastermind/head
honcho of his very own hardcore metal label, Stillborn. Sworn Enemy,
from Queens, New York, is his first signing and they are as you
might expect from a band tainted by the Jasta hand: unrelenting,
in-your-face, and full of steamroller riffs and fronted by One Angry
Guy. They just crush all that's in their path. To see Sworn Enemy's
"Sworn Enemy" video go to http://www.swornenemynyc.com.
Album in stores NOW. Don't f*ck with the ENEMY. MEMENTO (Columbia) These guys got

up steam and is probably playing on a COOL radio station near you.

Album in stores now. NOTHINGFACE (TVT) Singer Matt
Holt is recovering from a bronchial infection he contracted while
on the band's headlining tour. (The band had to cancel the remainder
of the dates.) Rest up, son, 'cos it's going to be a long, hot summer
of METAL! The band's web site, http://www.nothingface.net,
has many cool features and is always being updated. I would visit
if I were you. Nothingface's latest, "Skeletons", is out
now, mofos. HOTWIRE (RCA) These Californians
played Jack & Kelly Osbourne's joint birthday party in 2000.
Very cool! Now, they're on the Ozzfest and have just released their
first album on RCA. Here's a link to their media player: http://www.hyfntrak.com/hotwire/ozzfest.
ENDO (Columbia) Endo has a single
called "Simple Lies" going to radio June 15. To check
these guys out go to http://www.endomusic.com. CENTURY MEDIA
RECORDS LACUNA COIL
- http://www.lacunacoil.it Mainstream Boston-area radio station WAAF 107.3 FM has just added the LACUNA COIL single "Heaven's A Lie" into their rotation! All LACUNA COIL fans are asked to help support the band by calling WAAF at (617) 931-1223 or e-mailing WAAF's Program Director here. LACUNA COIL are currently on their first headlining tour of the East Coast & the Mid-West. The band filmed their first video for "Heaven's A Lie" in Los Angeles on May 26th. The video shoot was a 12 hour affair. MY RUIN - http://www.myruin.com Following the break-up of Tura Satana (previously called Manhole) in late 1998, veteran vocalist/spoken word artist Tairrie B. concentrated on a solo career recording as MY RUIN. The idea to form a new band came after touring through Europe with future MY RUIN bassist Meghan Mattox . The pair eventually met up with songwriter/guitarist Mick Murphy, and the hard-hitting drummer Yael was soon recruited into the fold, cementing an entirely new musical vision. Since their inception, MY RUIN have headlined tours in Europe, toured with Kittie in the U.S., and were voted "Best Hard Rock/Metal Band" by readers in the L.A. Weekly Awards in June 2002. "We received an overwhelming amount of e-mails from our fans telling us to sign to Century Media, so we decided to pursue it. They understand that this is a whole new band. Yes, I put the band together. Yes, I'm the front woman, but without [guitarist] Mick Murphy, there is no MY RUIN," states Tairrie B., who has received praise from Revolver Magazine for her "stunning, cement-mixer voice." "I also love the fact that they have woman-fronted bands on their roster and a lot of women working important jobs for the label." The Shape Of Things To Come four-song EP will be released on Century Media this summer and will feature album art by Chad Michael Ward (Soilwork, Naglfar, In Thy Dreams). The track listing will include "Made To Measure," "Grotesque," "Unmanageable," and a cover of The Plasmatics' "Sex Junkie." NEVERMORE -
http://www.nevermore.tv
Intelligent men who held no preconceived notions of what they should sound like, NEVERMORE launched themselves in 1994 and have never forsaken the histories of their varied backgrounds. Providing a backbone of resilience are ex-members of Sanctuary: the charismatic vocalist Warrel Dane and steadfast bassist Jim Sheppard, who survived their major label experience by the strength of their integrity when the world all-too-willingly embraced the grunge movement. Lending a modern influence to the bands blueprint was guitarist Jeff Loomis, whose classically trained background added an unmistakable depth to song composition and whose death metal heritage supplied ample vehemence. Drummer Van Williams solidified the nucleus of the band with his undulating, propulsive rhythms. Drawing inspiration from the darker things in life, it became obvious the strain of their collective creation defied categorization. In the two years since their masterpiece Dead Heart In A Dead World, NEVERMOREs superbly crafted and complicated versatility has been brooding. Thanks to the assistance of Queensrÿche/Dokken producer Kelly Gray, we are once again invited into the bands dark subconscious with 2003s Enemies Of Reality. Warrel Danes visceral, clarion calls leads the band to more limitless heights armed with the indestructible backbone of Williams and Sheppard while venom, foreboding, and poignant despair continue to be born from the hands of Loomis' within the confines of one song. The title track pummels you with its ferocity and cerebral aggression; Never Purify is a forlorn lament of the dismal reality weve surrounded ourselves in; and the emotionally evocative Who Decides exudes the insightfully mature observations through hindsight of a life lived in extremes. Another perfect execution forged in the innovative heart of their own dismal abyss, Enemies Of Reality is NEVERMORE as they should be: dark, aggressive, and endlessly enigmatic. "It was torturous and long, working in the middle of the night," states NEVERMORE vocalist Warrel Dane about maintaining his work schedule throughout the recording process for Enemies Of Reality. And torturous it was, as Warrel was struck with laryngitis in the middle of laying down his vocal tracks. Debuting four new songs at the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival on Friday, May 16th in Worcester, Massachusetts, Warrel Dane compares the new NEVERMORE material to "being hit over the head with a wet sock of raw sausage," which would - of course - have its greatest impact on vegetarians. For a more in-depth look into the mind of Warrel Dane during the making of Enemies Of Reality, pick up the May issue of Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles and read up on blind luck, modern day weapons, and insightful notes on the new songs. NEVERMORE will headline the two-day Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles 6-Pack Festival in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, June 13th, playing from 1:10 a.m. - 2:10 a.m. and utilizing Jag Panzer's Chris Broderick on second guitar. The final tracklisting for Enemies Of Reality - set for North American release on July 29th - is as follows: "Enemies Of Reality, " " Ambivalent," "Never Purify," "Tomorrow Turned Into Yesterday," "I, Voyager," "Create The Infinite," "Who Decides," "Noumenon," and "Seed Awakening." ARCH ENEMY -
http://www.archenemy.net "The title of the new Arch Enemy opus is Anthems Of Rebellion. There is a thread of ANTI-establishment and REBELLION that goes through all the songs' lyrics and also the artwork, but I wouldnt go as far as calling it a full-blown concept. That kind of stuff usually tends to get in the way of the music. I do think the lyrics are more focused and have a lot more 'bite' to them this time around. Musically, we have just focused on making the catchiest and cool ARCH ENEMY music we could come up with! Theres an absolute abundance of HEAVY riffs, THICK harmonies, RIPPING solos, FRANTIC drumming and SICK screaming - ALL OVER THIS ALBUM! The performances from the individual members are awesome! We are all so proud of each other! As far as the production goes, Andy Sneap really excelled himself on this one it sounds thicker and more heavy than the last album (Wages Of Sin). It really helped us a lot using Andy as a producer this time, he gave us a strong focus and made us work harder than weve ever done before. We have been known to be a bit lazy and complacent at times (!?). Andy soon knocked that out of us and got all Arch Enemy members thinking like true soldiers of metal it was hardcore! We are also putting together a limited-edition bonus CD with the first pressing (worldwide) that will have live tracks (from 2002) and a few of the Anthems Of Rebellion songs in head-spinning 5.1 (surround sound) mixes + some other goodies As usual, its hard to describe music in words. You will all be able to hear it soon enough anyway! I can tell you that personally speaking, as good an album that Wages Of Sin really was, I firmly believe we have moved on from there and made something that is equally as strong, if not stronger! Anthems Of Rebellion has got every type of feel and emotion that we want to have in our music... its beautiful and its ugly. And its very fucking metal." Anthems Of Rebellion is due out in North America on August 26th. Tentative song titles are: "Rebel (Intro)/Silent Wars," "We Will Rise," "Dead Eyes See No Future," "Instinct," "Leader Of The Rats," "Exist To Exit," "Despicable Heroes," "End Of The Line," "Dehumanization," "Anthem (Instrumental)," and "Saints And Sinners." ARCH ENEMY are the latest addition to the Fields of Rock festival, scheduled for June 15 at Goffertpark Fields in Nijmegen, Holland. Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Mudvayne, Ministry, Stone Sour, Nile, Opeth and Prong are among the artists scheduled to appear. THYRANE - http://www.thyrane.org Through an exclusive licensing deal with Spikefarm Records, Century Media is proud to bring you THYRANE's third full-length album, 2003s Hypnotic on June 17th. Recorded at Sundicoop Studio in Finland, preserving the genealogy of Finnish metal, boasting artwork by Dark Tranquillitys Niklas Sundin, and sure to please fans of the unexpected and of fellow countrymen And Oceans, the opening riff in Glamorama Demystified is reminiscent of a hook found in a classic rock song; Armaya, brings Middle Eastern sensibilities to a snow-laden Scandinavian landscape, and Hannamaris synthesizers on Firework casts a spell of nostalgia for the keyboard-drenched electronica of Missing Persons. Hail the hypnotic symphonies of rebellion! HYPNOTIC's tracklisting as as follows: "Human Weed," "Firework," "Glamorama Demystified," "Dance In The Air," "Armaya," "The Symptomatic," "Phantasmal Paranoia," "Sickening," "Of Suns And Flames," and "Heretic Hunt." NIGHTRAGE -
http://www.nightrage.com Honoring tradition, the band entered the famous halls of Studio Fredman with Arch Enemy/In Flames/Opeth producer Fredrik Nordström in September of 2002 to record an offering of sophisticated savagery fit for those who both appreciate and greatly miss the phenomenal contributions of one of Gothenburgs greatest bands, At The Gates. Featuring artwork by Dark Tranquillity guitarist Niklas Sundin, Sweet Vengeance is a cascade of repressed rage finally given life, filled with fists of sound dedicated to retaliation and fueled by scathing lyrical passages that most people only fantasize of screaming aloud into the faces of their enemies. For those dedicated to retribution, you simply cannot go wrong with the aggression that fuels The Tremor, Macabre Apparition, and The Glow Of The Setting Sun. When the world turns against you and you find yourself buried in struggle, pain, and despair, there is always music to carry you through such hardship. Waiting for you in the light at the end of the tunnel is NIGHTRAGE. To deal with those who have conspired and inflicted ill will against you, take heed: Gather your strength and draw inspiration from bitter, sweet vengeance. The finalized tracklisting for the NIGHTRAGE debut album, Sweet Vengeance - slated for a July 29th release - is as follows: "The Tremor," "The Glow Of The Setting Sun," "Hero," "Elusive Emotion," "Gloomy Daydreams," "Macabre Apparition," "In My Heart," "Ethereal," "Circle Of Pain," "At The Ends Of The Earth," "The Howls Of The Wolves (Instrumental)." SOLEFALD - http://www.solefald.org To be misunderstood is a great way to nurture a cult following. Cornelius Jakhelln - who constitutes one half of the Norwegian band SOLEFALD - understands this well. In a recent interview with Digital Metal.com, Cornelius discusses Cradle Of Filth, pianos, and the limitations of language: The new record takes a different path than Pill Against The Ageless Ills did. Was that a pre-conceived move? We wanted to re-direct ourselves to the sound of our first album, 1997's Linear Scaffold. That record was very Cradle Of Filth-inspired musically speaking, but it was more poetic than Cradle has ever been. This new one is a more desperate album, and is more emotional than Pills.... Pills... had some quite strong thrash overtones like Slayer and that thrash pack. Where does the inspiration for your unique and divergent sound come from? Our sound is what happens when two minds come together and compose. This music stems from combined interaction of piano and guitar, therefore the chords are more varied than most metal bands. Because of the piano influence, we incorporate dense, rich chords into a saturated scene. As well, our music is intellectual. Maybe that's why people complain about Solefald. The lyrics on the new record are sung in four languages (English, French, German, Norwegian). Why did you decide to implement this broad scope when dealing with your lyrics? I live in Paris, and thus I see a bilingual reality. Actually, you live in the province Quebec and you probably see it far more often than I do. The combination of languages comes naturally for me. I look at Bathory, a band that has always sung about struggle and battle themes. But they've only used English for all the lyrics. Even Dimmu Borgir and all those big metal bands created these epic scenes, but they only express themselves in English. I see that as problematic. Your range of words utilizing only one language is very limited. And those same words tend to get worn out when everyone is writing about the same concept. All these bands end up writing the same lyrics. The German language has a very strong sound, whereas French is a softer language. So, using these different languages adds to the dynamic of our project.
