Interview With MR. HATE

Mr. Hate are :
Carsten "livelongandprosper" Schulz on Lead Vocals

How would you classify your music?

Roger : Groove orientated heavy rock, lots of thought goes into the rhythm section, but retaining a heavier style with harmonious vocals.

Do you all have day jobs and if so what do you do?

Roger : Chief of a forwarding company.
Carsten : Student.
Steffen : Student.
Henning : Travel Agent


How did the band get together?

Roger : In '92 I met Manfred Kyle and Ace and decided to get a band together. Later we brought in Henning and advertised for a singer and in came Carsten. We were playing bluesy rock songs at that time. Ace then decided to quite. Manfred wanted the band to have two guitarists and this brought in Steffen. Manfred then left and left the four of us who are still in the band now.

What are your musical backgrounds?

Roger : listening to music since the age of six, friends influenced me to listen to heavy rock like Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Kiss, LynchMob and my favourite band Motley Crue. Like some NWOBHM too.
Carsten : Robert Plant, Ray Gillen, Jon Bon Jovi, Sting
Henning : Steve Gadd, Steve Smith, Jeff Pocaro
Steffen : Yngwie Malmsteen, George Lynch, Steve Rothery, Tony Macalpine (had guitar lessons by Joey Taffola!)


What kind of music do you like to listen to when your not playing?

Roger : At this present time I am not listening to any music when I am not playing.
Carsten : almost everything, but mainly hardrock.
Henning : funk and classic rock stuff.
Steffen : AOR, hard rock, progressive stuff.


What do you do to relax?

Roger : Watch TV, drink beer and play computer games (mainly racing games).
Carsten : surving on the internet, listen to music!
Henning : playing on sony play station.
Steffen : smoke & eat & drink.


What is the most satisfying thing about being in a band ?

Roger : Being on stage and getting good feedback from the audience.
Carsten : getting a very cheap form of psycho therapy.
Henning : freakin' out.
Steffen : chicks & drinks for free.


How well is the album selling ?

Roger : Well, it's not selling as well as expected, but this is due to lack of promotion, distribution on the part of the record label we were with.

Do you have your own studio ?

Roger : No, we hired a studio to record 'Fragments' for 5 weeks.
Since then we have recorded a 12 track demo tape, which we did in 2 days for the purpose of getting a new record deal.


If you had the chance to jam with any band, who would that be?

Roger : Motley Crue.
Henning : Toto or Steely Dan.
Steffen : Journey or Dokken.
Carsten : Led Zeppelin or Badlands.


What's the best thing that has ever happened to you?

Roger : Getting the band together to the present line-up and getting the record deal, although that has now collapsed and meeting my wife.
Carsten : my last girl-friend.
Henning : life in general.
Steffen : finding these guys.


What's the worst thing that has ever happened to you?

Roger : Collapse of the record deal.
Carsten : losing my last girl-friend.
Henning : ?
Steffen : losing my car


Who writes the songs?

Roger : to a degree, Steffen and myself write the songs,but we all put some input into them.

Are you pleased with the way the album turned out, Is there anything you would change?

Roger : We recorded 'Fragments' with no recording engineer, well I did act as the recording engineer and I am very pleased with the result with the result. I would not change anything on the album.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Roger : I get inspiration from listening to other music.
Carsten : my weird and psycho mind.
Henning : rehearsing.
Steffen : see Roger.


Who thought of the band's name and how did you choose it?

Roger : I chose the name, I am huge fan of The Tubes, they have a song called Mr.Hate. The story of the song is that this guy picks up his daily newspaper and read that his mum and dad is dead and he's being accused of murder.
In the end it turns out that he did kill the, but he can't remember doing it. So I thought it was a cool name.


Which are you personal favorite songs and why?

Roger : 'Fragments', is one of my favourites because it was a band effort, it's raw power, cool start and then suddenly explodes. 'Crucify', 'Gun In The Cradle' and 'Who Do You Think You Are'
Carsten : "Fragments" and "How Do You...", 'cause this is, what MR.HATE's all about!
Henning : the whole record!

Do you play many gigs and if so where?

Roger : Not at the moment as the live scene in Germany is into Hip-Hop, Disco, Etc.


What is you view of the music scene in Heidelberg?

Roger : There's no hard rock scene anymore in Heidelberg

What band/s would you say has had the most influence on you?

Roger : Motley Crue.
Carsten : Led Zeppelin.
Henning : too many to mention
Steffen : Dokken


What are your plans for the future?

Roger : To play more gigs, Get another record deal and not to argue too much with my other band members
Carsten : getting rich and famous.
Henning : getting famous & handsome.
Steffen : getting handsome, rich & famous.


Any last words or remarks?

Roger : Hopefully, the music world will drop the bad taste of Techno, Hip-Hop, etc and get back to the great sounds of hard rock. Since every dog has it's day maybe Mr. Hate will be right there on the spot when this time comes.
Carsten : Well, I hope, people will get the opportunity to listen to our stuff and find out, that this really is true & dedicated music!
