Interview with Dagmahr

How would you classify your music?

Pierre: I would say it's a mix of gold and new prog rock. It's harder than Genesis and the likes but not as hard as newer bands like Anekdoten.

Philippe: I think it is a kind of progressive rock music.

Do you all have day jobs and if so what do you do?

Philippe: I have no day job, but I'm studying music at the Laval University in Quebec City.

Yves: I am writer and human resources adviser.

Pierre: I'm fruits and vegetables clerk in a supermarket
.

How did the band get together ?

Philippe: I met Mathieu in college where we formed a tribute to Marillon. As Mathieu and Yves were already working on the project (Dagmahr). Mathieu asked me to join the band.

After some months of rehearsal in in Lessard's basement, we realized that something/someone was missing.

Then Pierre, Yves's former bandmate, brought his keyboards and finally fills in the gap.

What are your musical backgrounds ?

Philippe: I grew up surround by jazz and classical music, my father was a jazz drummer and a big classical music fan. By the age of 13, I was introduced to the music of Rush and Marillon by friends, and I really liked it. Subsequentely, I listened to Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, etc. I played in different kind of band (jazz big band, classical orchestra and many rock bands).

Pierre: I'm an ex-guitar player. I got bored studying classical guitar and found the piano to be a more complete instrument. Mathieu might not agree!!!

Yves: I'm a selftaught bassist since the age of twelve. I was introduced very early in his life to the music of a classical prog (Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Henry Cow, Soft Machine, Gong, etc.).

What kind of music do you to listen to when your not playing ?

Philippe: Every kind of music. Jazz, classical but most of the time I listened to progressive music.

Pierre: The are two records that I listen morethan the others: Mozart's requiem and Petrer Gabriel's security.

Yves: Now, I listen actual music. Province of Quebec is a centerplace for this music.

What do you do to relax ?

Philippe: It's not very original, but a cold beer with good prog music is the only way, for me, to relax

Pierre: No surprise here, I listen to some music

Yves: Reading, writing some poem and good supper with a glass of wine with friends.

If you had the chance to jam with any band, who would that be ?

Philippe: I would like to jam with some great band like Yes or King Crimson

Pierre: I would probably be very nervous, but the ultimate jam would be with the guys from Gentle Giant.

Yves: For me, I would like to jam with King Crimson (Starless period), Art Zoid (french group), Henry Cow and specially with Fred Frith.

Whats the best thing that has ever happened to you ?

Philippe: To have great and talented bandmates like now

Pierre: Meeting people that I get along great with is always fun

Yves: To be publishing and playing the band's music (original song)

Whats the worst thing that has ever happened to you ?

Philippe : Be born in the late seventies...

Pierre See the answer of question 2 !!!

Yves: Meeting the mother of my sons

Who writes the songs ?

Philippe : For most of the songs, it is Mathieu but Yves writes good lyrics

Pierre: Most of the times, it's Mathieu who brings an idea and we start there. But everybody brings something to the music of Dagmahr

Where do you get your inspiration ?

Philippe: It is a very confidential information : Top Secret!

Pierre How should I know?!?

Yves: In my whole life

Who thought of the band name and how did you choose it ?

group: It was Yves who find the name. We all agreed when he submitted it to us. You surely realized that it was a familiar words : it's the name of Henry Cow and Art bear's singer. It's for the honor for a superb vocal and theatrical style of Dagmar Krause

Which is your personal favorite song and why ?

Philippe: It's Leaving for Paris. It's the only song composed entirely by the band. It's really challenging to play a 16 minutes long piece of music live

Pierre: Leaving for Paris and Just in words because the first one has a lot of differents sections that mix well together and the second one for its simplicity but effectiveness

Yves: It's Leaving of Paris because I feel different kind of emotions when I play this song

Do you play many gigs and if so where ?

group: We play in the Prog-East in the bar at Le D'auteuil in June in Quebec city. We play with a Belgian group call Present in Quai des Brumes at Montreal, Quebec.

What is your view of the music scene in Quebec ?

Philippe: Here in North America our music scene is something like bullshit! There is no place for creativily and originality. All the business is ruled by one thing: Cash. I'm sure you'll understand.

Pierre: I dont't know if it's a trend everywhere in the world but in Quebec, tribute bands are very popular. I get sick seeing people paying 20$ to see a tribute to Genesis and it takes them everything to pay 5$ to see a band that does original material. It's very frustrating too see a comedian who works all year long get a lower yearly income than a clerk like me in a Super Market. You can say that money isn't everything and it's true but there's nothing more rewarding for an artist than being able to say that he or she is living from the income from the art that he's or sh's performing.

What bands would you say have most influence on you ?

Philippe: Rush, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and Marillon. More recently VDGG

Pierre: Genesis, Gentle Giant, Led Zeppelin pop in my head first but there's a lot of other artists that influenced me.

Yves: King Crimson and VDGG. Recently Henry Cow.

What are your plans for the future ?

Group: To play !!! We try to plan a small tour in Europe and we also plan to record a second CD if we can get signed by a major label.

Any last words or remarks ?

Group: There only one thing I'll say, is a very, very, very special thank to you for your support an we really appreciate what you've done.

We need people like you who takes some of his time to help nee bands like us.
