Interview with Peter Tuthill
(Ebony Tears & Dog Faced Gods)

How would you classify your music. ?
With regards to Ebony Tears and Dog Faced Gods. ?

Dog Faced Gods is more aggressive than Ebony Tears...

Far more complicated than Ebony Tears...

Ebony Tears is more like a blend between Swedish death-metal, German heavy-metal, folkmusic and speedmetal.

Dog Faced Gods is more technical, more like Meshuggah and Strapping Young Lad.

Dog Faced Gods doesnīt use violins and female vocals like Ebony Tears...

So the music styles are very different from each other...

Do you all have day jobs and if so what do you do. ?

I work as a webdesigner at a webberau in Kista, Sweden. Johnny works as a truckdriver. Conny does nothing but sitting around playing the guitar. I donīt really know what Rickard works with...

Why did you start playing your instruments. ?

This Question I can only answer for myself...

I started playing the guitar when I was 9 years old...

I started playing because my parents thought that I should learn how to play an instrument, since I didnīt do so well at soccer that they had tried to get me into before...

I just stood there looking for stones in the court, so I guess that wasnīt my thing Well, I continued to play the guitar, and when I was about 14 years old I started playing the bass in the schoolband at my school.

After that I started playing the bass in a band with some friends.

When I was 16 I started at a music school in Stockholm, Sweden that is called RYTMUS (SMK). And after that I started playing with D.F.G and E.T...

Being a rockstar has always been my biggest dream, so now when Iīm quite on the way up there I see a big meaning in my life...

When did you start playing with Ebony Tears and why have you formed Dog Faced Gods with vitually the same members. ?

I started playing with E.T in September 1997. I had just quit playing with my old band called "Bulldozer", and me and the drummer of "Bulldozer" put up an ad in the local musicstores in Stockholm looking for a new band to play with.

About a week later Johnny called me and said that he was really interested in me playing the bass, but that they didnīt have a need for a drummer, so I said yes, and here I am today...

At the beginning we werenīt thinking about forming another band. We were going to use the material for the next E.T CD, but as we started playing the songs we came to the conclusion that the music was not at all the same and that we should probably form another band...

Thatīs why D.F.G has almost the same lineup as E.T, because it was at the beginning supposed to be E.T music.

In October we formed D.F.G and in January we signed a contract with Black Sun Records.

How did the band get together. ?

Well, as I said before, I put up an ad in musicstores and got caught in both E.T and D.F.G...

And D.F.G was formed out of E.T....

What do you like to do in your spare time. ?

I like to go to parties, see my friends and my girlfriend, Linn, make homepages, chat on the internet, talking on the phone and practicing playing the bass and the guitar...

What kind of music do you like to listen to when your not playing. ?

Hmmmmm....

Well you see, Iīve got a pretty mixed musictaste...

My favourite bands are Meshuggah, 3rd Eye Blind, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Live and Weezer...

I listen to basically all the music there is, but I hate techno, hip-hop and shit like that...

I think that stuff SUX big time! Itīs so annoying how you can make music just by sitting at a computer putting like 4 chords together to make a song and then record some female vocals and some malevocals on top to make people dance...

Who thought of the name Ebony Tears and how did you choose it. ?

Hmmmmm...

I think Conny was the one who came up with the name Ebony Tears. I think he got it from an old Cathedral record or something...

Who thought of the name Dog Faced Gods and how did you choose it. ?

Conny came up with the name. He got it from Testamentīs record "Low", where one of the songs is called "Dog Faced Gods"...

Who writes most of the songs. ?

Conny writes all the music and all the lyrics first, and then we play it together and change some things along the way if weīre not satisfied with the results...

Do you think the band ebony tears will be phased out or will you continue to run both bands at the same time. ?

Well I think that E.T will be phased out sooner or later, but E.T will record at least one more album before that happens.

Our main concern right now is D.F.G and we put 100% effort into that... So weīll see what happens.

How different is the music of Ebony Tears to Dog Faced Gods. ?

Ebony Tears is more death-metal and folk music inspired, and D.F.G is more aggressive and technical.

Which is your personal favourite song and why. ?

My favourite E.T song is "Skunk Hour". I like it the most because itīs the most aggressive song on "Tortura Insomniae" and itīs more experimental than the other songs on the album.

My favourite D.F.G song is probably "God Over All". I really donīt know why I like it the best...

Maybe itīs because itīs so technical, since I really like technical music...

Do you play many gigs and if so where. ?

Well, we havenīt played a single gig yet, but I think weīre going on tour sometime next year with D.F.G...

Iīve also heard that E.T will go to Japan for a little tour this October, but I donīt think that is fully booked...

What is your view of the music scene in Sweden. ?

I think that the Swedish music scene is very good nowadays. With bands like Meshuggah and Entombed that I really like...

I just think itīs a pity that we export so many techno and dancebands...

I heard that most Swedes are listening to Hard Rock, So why are there still quite a few metal bands coming from Sweden. ?

Swedes listening to Hard Rock!?!

Where did you get that from?

Most swedes listen to that danceshit...

Not much Hard Rock here, but Metal is pretty big here so I guess thatīs why we export quite a few metalbands...

When you were younger, what did you want to be. ?

Iīve always wanted to be a rockstar... Itīs always been my biggest dream... well, correction, when I was really young like 2-6 years old, I wanted to be a backhoeoperator (Bulldozer driver), but that changed when I started listening to bands like DIO and Kiss...

What bands would you say have had most influence on you. ?

Probably DIO, Kiss, Meshuggah, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Primus, Stone Temple Pilots and Machine Head...

What is the band doing at the moment. ?

At the moment we are having some technical difficulties, since Connyīs amplifier broke down...

But apart from that weīre practicing for the upcoming D.F.G album that weīre going to record in May 1998 in Studio Underground in Västerås, Sweden.

What are your plans for the future. ?

To record the D.F.G album, release it and go on tour...

I donīt know about E.T, since we have put that on the shelf for a while...

Any last words or remarks ?

Yup! Check out the upcoming D.F.G album!

Itīs going to be a killer!

A punch right in the face from the beginning to the end!
